Summer’s Here — What to Do with Those Rain Boots?

Rain boots might not be the first thing on your mind when the sun’s out and the paddling pool is full — but if your child has a favourite pair (especially if they’re made from natural rubber), how you store them in the off-season can make a real difference.

Here’s how to keep their wellies in great shape, so they’re ready for the next puddle, whenever it comes.

1. Clean Them Properly (But Gently)

Before packing them away, check the soles and lining for any lingering bits of mud, leaves, or even the odd pebble.

  • Rinse them with lukewarm water (no hot water!)
  • Use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe the surface
  • Let them air dry naturally — no heaters, no tumble dryers, no full sun

If they’re really mucky inside, a bit of diluted gentle soap will help, but rinse thoroughly.

2. Keep Them Cool, Dry and Dark

Natural rubber is a beautiful, flexible, and biodegradable material — but it doesn’t love heat or UV light. Extended exposure to direct sunlight or warmth can cause cracking, fading or drying out.

So avoid:

  • Conservatories
  • Window ledges
  • Car boots
  • Cupboards near radiators or hot pipes

Instead, choose a cool, shaded indoor space. A hallway cupboard or under-bed storage works well.

3. Let Them Breathe

It might be tempting to tuck them away in a plastic bag, but that’s a fast track to musty smells and potential mould.

Instead:

  • Store them standing upright if possible
  • Avoid stacking or folding — it stresses the rubber and can deform the shape
  • If needed, stuff them loosely with newspaper or a soft cloth to help hold their shape and absorb moisture

4. No Need for Fancy Products

You don’t need special sprays, conditioners, or boot oils — though some parents use a light rub of olive oil or rubber balm if boots look a little tired after the season.

But for most families, a good clean and careful storage is enough.

5. Check Them Before Autumn Comes

Once the wet weather starts creeping back in, give the boots a quick check:

  • Are the soles still grippy?
  • Any signs of cracking or stiffness?
  • Do they still fit? (They grow so fast, don’t they?)

If all’s well, they’re good to go. If not — you’ve got time to size up.

A Note from Us

At Babylosophy, we make boots that are built to last — soft, sturdy, and designed with growing feet in mind. But even the best wellies need rest now and then.

With a bit of off-season care, your child’s rain boots will be just as ready for the next adventure as they were on day one.
